About the poem
Plato’s Hand grew out of my volunteer coaching with the staff of Goodwill Caravan—refugees who courageously serve other refugees while carrying their own deep tragedy and trauma. The title challenges the classic Allegory of the Cave, tracking what happens when a survivor steps out of the dark. Traumatized souls often emerge with their hands clenched tight in self-preservation just to survive the heavy, invisible tonnage of their past.
The poem moves structurally from the isolated “I” to the collective “we” to prove that idealism does not live in the clouds; we can bring it to earth collectively when one palm extends outside the self. Service does not wait until we are fully whole. By walking directly into the blinding light together, the stubborn “me” palm is finally able to soften—proving that the wounded often heal by giving.
Plato’s Hand
I. Trapped
I am not an island of grief,
but a tiny dot on a turning wheel,
sunk in tiredness deep within the marrow.
My fingers welded to the iron rail: turn and turn.
The deck beneath me tilts in a turbulent sea,
my breath refuses to anchor.
I forget to drink the air.
Who cares?
This hand is for me, and this hand is for me,
bearing a tonnage the world refuses to see;
my eyes dare not look past the frame.
II. Looking
Yet there—upon the blurred horizon,
pale souls, like me,
knotted to their trenches.
III. Recognizing
We are carried by the same gravity,
bound to a circle that spares no one.
A bitter baton passes in a timeless race—sun down, sun up.
Yet watch—the horizon breaks.
Every day, the dawn returns,
patient in its endless call:
IV. Unwelding
Walk to the sun,
let squinting eyes meet the beam.
Hear—as silence turns to speech,
a heartbeat wakes from the lonely earth.
For here, hands are taking and hands are giving,
melting the iron rail,
and between the night and the dew,
we become the sun.
V. Reaching
Now—the “me” palm softens,
expanding like a sick lung drawing breath.
This hand is for me,
and this hand I am giving.
