By Charles Fowler

We wondered why people once waited
For kindness to all be pre-dated;
For caring, we found,
Could ripple around —
One small act, and strangers related.

They told us compassion was feeling,
But we brought it alive in the doing:
A hand freely lent,
A moment well spent,
Our common humanity showing.

Through World Values Day came a notion:
Our values are more than emotion.
When values take flight
In the things we do right,
They ripple like waves on an ocean.

We meet people we’d never have known,
And find our horizons had grown.
Through helping and sharing,
Connecting and caring,
The seeds of concordance are sown.

And now, looking back on our era,
We wonder it wasn’t made clearer:
That service and giving
Are foundations for living—
Which brings us together, and nearer.

So why did they say volunteering
Was something that needed arranging?
Why not every day,
In some small, human way,
Let compassion set ripples in motion?
