In the dark of the night
I dig deep into my heart,
Searching for an answer, a light.
How shall I wrap this precious gift of life?
With a shiny paper of gold
Or something plain and brown and not so bold?
With pink and blue ribbons?
Diamond, sapphire and emerald sequins?
How shall I wrap this precious gift?
I look through the window
Rain splattering against the glass,
Staring at me with their big eyes
Droplets of tears run down my cheeks.
I question myself again,
and again…
How shall I wrap this precious gift of joy and happiness?
Tiny hands, a strong grip
Signalling a bond,
Loveable smile
Sparkling eyes looking into mine,
Soft breath
The smell of creation.
Suddenly,
A stream of light,
It was dawn
I had not realised.
Birth of a new day
I enter the light
Butterfly breaks loose
The answer crystallizes.
It doesn’t need to be
A shiny paper, an emerald or sapphire,
Not even a diamond stone.
I shall wrap it with the
Gem of Gratitude.
